2013 was a great year with many new attendees and their great rides. We had a fantastic "field trip" to Canepa in Scotts Valley and will be sure to do it again in 2014. More suggestions for "featured car club", field trips to local landmarks, or other ways to make your second Saturday morning more exciting are all welcome. Please email us at [email protected] with your suggestions and check out photos and join the group on FaceBook at https://www.facebook.com/groups/secondSSaturdays/

Greetings Friends of Seconds Saturdays,
I am pleased to announce we are back for 2013 starting on April 13th at our new time of 9am. Hooray for an extra hour of Saturday sleep! In addition to our various SS-famous scone concoctions of the past (bacon, chocolate, cherry), for the April and May events El Sur SF elsursf.com will be selling their delicious empanadas from their restored Citroen H-van. If you just can’t wait until April to try these delicious pastries, oh and dulce de leche filled churros (!), check out their calendar for their next location in the Bay Area.
In the meantime you can catch up on other action at Hanzel’s in the Fall 2012 issue of Motor Trend Classic with a story on Grandpa Ed’s 1952 HanzLift tow truck. It is also available online here, but really, buy the quarterly magazine. It’s beautifully written, photographed and published each quarter.
Hope to see you at our 5 events this year: April 13th, May 11th, June 8th, July 13th, August 10th
Chris & Henry Hanzel
***REMINDER: Please drive safely when pulling into the shop or the parking lot across the street so as to not run over the feral children and other attendees. Also, if you park on the street or the lot please pay for parking so you do not incur a fine. Hanzel’s will gladly provide scones and coffee but parking is up to you.***

June attendance sets new Seconds Saturdays record
The June 9th event continued the steady growth of cool cars and their owners with largest ever turnout ranging from another amazing 1937 Chevrolet truck (its big and brown and amazing), two motorcycles with sidecars and a Royal Enfield, three amazing LeMons racers: the always quick and amazingly engineered Model T GT, the car that cannot be killed MGB ZomBee, and a creative solution to drivers of varying heights with the dual control Beetle of Team Ferdinandwertschätzungsgesellschaft (Ferdinand Appreciation Society), the return of the always crown pleasing Ford big-block powered Mercedes Heckflosse, a BMW E30 M3, Citroen SM(!), multiple DSs, our first Ami 8 and many, many other great cars. We appreciate everyone taking time out of your Saturday to come and continue to make this event even better. Check out our photos of who showed up here.
Our next event is Saturday July 14th. Hope to see you there!

Multiple Hanzel events in May continues to draw crowds
May was jammed packed with another great Seconds Saturday turnout that included a SAAB Sonett, all manner of air cooled German hardware and the "usual" gang of Citroens. As if one day of fun wasn't enough we stayed open the previous Friday for the neighborhood "First Fridays" (what a clever name) and had the honor of a display by Steven Cavalieri that included prints from the books "Racing Colours", posters from the 24 Hours of Lemons, and other original artwork. http://www.stevencavalieri.com/

SECONDS SATURDAYS is back in 2012 on March 10th
Happy New Year friends of the automobile! Henry and I are pleased to announce that the first Seconds Saturdays of 2012 will be March 10th at the shop. This years' events will be a more 'intimate' affair as we no longer have use of the parking lot across the street. So instead you'll need to OCCUPY the shop with the rest of the Citroens and usual suspects. Parking meters out front will be enforced so be sure to bring your quarters just in case. Parking inside is first come, first served along with the coffee, donuts, scones and whatever else we slap together at the last minute. The door is usually up by 8am so please drive in slowly and try not to run over the other attendees and children. Thanks for coming last year and we hope to see more cool stuff and car folks this year.
Henry & Chris Hanzel
PS. Motorcycles, scooters, pedal cars, steam trains, vintage boats and trailers are all welcome. We've had a few last year and it would be a hoot to see some more.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Back to the Future....
Looking ahead to 2012 we are planning some exciting events with local car clubs being featured at our little get together. If you have a gang of car friends that you want showcased just let us know and we'll schedule you for next year. The first event is tentatively for April 14th. Email us at our new address: [email protected] or if you want to stay informed for the first event. Thanks,Chris & Henry Hanzel

3rd SECONDS SATURDAYS RECAP - September 13, 2011
Thanks to everyone who showed up to the 3rd and final Seconds Saturdays of 2011. Don't fret, we'll be back in 2012 when the weather is better and even more project cars are (hopefully) complete and back on the road. Despite the smaller turnout than the 2nd event we still had a great array of automobiles complete with the only attendee of all three events with his antithesis of trailer queens (driven to Utah and back since the 2nd event and up through Nevada and Idaho after the 2st event) and my favorite car, the Big Block powered Mercedes. I love vehicles that are a nice balance of subtle and brute force and this vehicle is it. Two other vehicles that fall under the similar vein were a beautiful pearl white Ford Falcon and a midnight black GMC Syclone. Both fairly "simple" in appearance without some garish "LOOK AT ME" element but both that pack a punch under the hood where it counts. Britania was represented again with MG A's and B's, Francophiles in DS's, an Acadiane and a Traction Avant leaked hydraulic fluid again, no electric cars were present this time as the owner of the Tesla from the 2nd event instead brought his "electric blue" Volvo V70R station wagon and the home made electric Honda Civic stayed at home to make way for a Chevy truck on 20's (completely absent of chrome and low profile tires) from 1937. We even had a grand-daddy of SUVs, an AMC Eagle. For all you off roading enthusiasts (not poser soccer moms of the Stoneridge parking lot) a well appointed Jeep Wrangler of Hooniverse fame is for sale. Photos of the 3rd and final Seconds Saturdays of 2011 can be found at https://picasaweb.google.com/101400198375253371745/20110910SecondsSaturdays003 We will be back in 2012. If you have a club that wants to host an event on the Second Saturday of a particular month shoot me an email and let me know so we can sign you up as the "Featured Group/ Club/ Band on knuckle heads".
Thanks so much to everyone that has made these three events of 2011 memorable. Spread the word for next year. We look forward to more great cars, enthusiastic car people and scones (delicious again Mom!!).
See below for all the particulars, photos and other write ups on who and what has shown up at previous events. Email Chris if you have any questions at [email protected]

The 3rd SECONDS SATURDAYS is a go!! September 10, 2011
Henry and Chris Hanzel are happy to announce we will be having a 3rd Seconds Saturdays on September 10th. The weather is getting better and more great people are bringing their cars. We had diesels, electric cars, leaky British cars, leaky American cars, and of course leaky French cars. But the one thing that was the same among them was the people. You make it the great event that this is becoming so please come out with your family and friends and enjoy a relaxing morning with fun people, cars and potentially more great pastry. Lets make this next one the best yet with an even great range of cars, trailers, boats, you name it. See below for all the particulars, photos and other write ups on who and what has shown up, or email Chris if you have any questions at [email protected]

SECOND SECONDS SATURDAYS RECAP - August 13, 2011
The Second Seconds Saturdays happened this Saturday August 13th and was even better than the First. We were greeted with better weather, a bigger turnout and even more diverse group of vehicles and things trailered (not cars of course). Thanks first to Robert Norby, Jack Ross and Elizabeth Hanzel for the delicious donuts and scones. They were enjoyed by all!
Like Noah’s ark creatures of all sorts assembled two-by-two: diesels (“Big Red” a Ford F-250 and a VW Golf TDI), electrics (a homespun Honda Civic and a Tesla), MGs (an MGA and a MG-Bee), trailers (Sears, Roebuck & Company (Allstate) "Tag-a-long" with custom “Oregon Trail” theme for the previous IOE winning LeMons effort (http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2011/06/and-the-real-winner-is-14/) behind the ZomBee and a handmade, small craft row boat behind "The Jungle Bus", a 7th generation Chevy Suburban). And of course Citroens multiplied like rabbits with a new “single headlight” DS, pale blue 2CV and silver CX joining the rest that lay in wait in the shop.
The big block fuel injected Mercedes made its second appearance after a “short” ~3300 mile loop in the past month which included Las Vegas, central Utah and Idaho. Sitting and being polished in a garage this car is not. After a few modifications to keep the big exhaust from cooking the fuel cell Rob will take the beautiful German-American hybrid on another “test-run” back on the road where it belongs.
Check out the photos and see what else showed up at the August 13 event here: https://picasaweb.google.com/101400198375253371745/20110813SecondsSaturdays002
Thanks again for the turnout and I hope everyone enjoyed the great selection of cars that everyone brought. A 3rd event for September is on the books so please put it on your calendar and I hope you can make it out to the next Seconds Saturdays. I'll be inviting a bunch of other local car groups to come and show off their hardware and help fill the lot across the street. Let’s hope for continued good weather in September for an even bigger turnout!! Please email me with any suggestions to make this event even better.
A few friendly reminders about the event:
The goal of “Seconds Saturdays” is to create a semi-regular event in Oakland to showcase cool cars and boost the egos of their respective owners. If all goes well we’ll do it again in October (September is planned so be there) or whenever we get around to it.
Please direct all questions about the event, suggestions, and possible future dates to [email protected]

SECOND SECONDS SATURDAYS INFO - August 13, 2011
Greetings fellow automotive enthusiasts. Here is your invitation to the 2nd “Seconds Saturdays” on August 13th at Hanzel Auto Body Works in Oakland, CA. The first event was a great success and thanks to everyone that showed up to the first ever Seconds Saturdays. Photos can be found at https://picasaweb.google.com/christophe … turdays001 I'm guessing the odd cold summer morning and the LeMons race in Denver kept some folks away but we did have some LeMons representation with Andrew and Ben from Huey Newis and the Lose with their sweet Volvo and Datsun pickup. There were more Citroens than you could shake a baguette at including DS wagons, sedans and convertibles (full size and pedal car variety) 2CV, Acadiane and Traction Avant. In addition to all the frenchness were two different Ford V8 engine swaps into some unusual candidates: a Graham Hollywood and a Mercedes 220s. Both were stunning and well put together. The Graham with it's 302 was subtle with its slightly larger than stock tires and rake that gave it a luxurious hotrod look. The Merc was slightly less subtle with its burbly exhaust and multiple hood louvers but it's installation of the engine and the guages in the stock dash made it look like they belonged there.
In order to maintain his diamond lane HOV status multiple Citroen owner and friend Jack replaced his Prius with a natural gas vehicle, an ex-Sheriffs Crown Vic that was amazingly clean and well maintained. Purchased from an auction in Washington state and shipped down it now serves to part the ways of traffic during commute time in the diamond lane. The push bar and A-pillar lights don't hurt to clear paths either.
Two neighbors down the street kindly brought their first gen Corvette and Porsche 912R. The Vette is amazingly original looked fantastic with those wheels and hub caps. The 912R is what Porsche should have made a racing version of the 912. At under 1900 lbs this orange wonder is a sight to be seen. Every part has been massaged over to help remove 300lbs from the stock weight.
Thanks again for the turnout and I hope everyone enjoyed the great selection of cars that everyone brought. A 3rd event for September is likely as well so please put it on your calender and I hope you can make it out to the next Seconds Saturdays. I'll be inviting a bunch of other local car groups to come and show off their hardware and help fill the lot across the street. Lets hope for better weather in August and an even bigger turnout!!

FIRST SECONDS SATURDAYS INFO - July 9, 2011
Greetings fellow automotive enthusiasts. Here is your invitation to the first “Seconds Saturdays” on July 9th at Hanzel Auto Body Works in Oakland, CA. Artists, hipsters and ironic moustache enthusiasts have “First Fridays” (http://oaklandartmurmur.org/) to support Oakland’s art and cultural venues. “Seconds Saturdays” was concocted to support the culture of all things automotive. And by “support the culture of all things automotive” I mean come and hang out with your unique daily driver, “race car”, or trailer queen and check out what everyone else brought. We are equal-opportunity & non-discriminatory. Imperfections welcomed; the “seconds” of the automotive world. All years, makes, models and countries of origin are encouraged. Fabulous French flotsam at this loosely organized event will be well represented with various years of Citroens in all manner of disrepair by your hosts, Henry and Chris Hanzel. Bring your own exceptional example of automotive greatness to help balance out the stinky cheesiness of all this hydraulic hardware.
There will be limited parking within the shop (456 23rd Street, Oakland, CA) for display of your vehicle depending on how many “normal” cars are being repaired from run-ins with other immovable objects on the roadway. During the week Hanzel’s is a working auto repair shop, but on “Seconds Saturdays” it will be a showcase of unique/fabulous/terrible automotive creations. If there is no room in the shop for your car please park across the street from Hanzel’s in the Douglas Parking lot. Be sure to pay for your own parking to avoid a fine or ticket. It is only $7 and you can pay with old fashioned cash or newfangled smart phones. Henry, Chris and Hanzel Auto Body Works does not pay for your parking.
The event will start around 8am and will run until 10am allowing enough time for any Lucas powered cars and their owners to enjoy the company of others during daylight hours.
A few friendly reminders about the event:
The goal of “Seconds Saturdays” is to create a semi-regular event in Oakland to showcase cool cars and boost the egos of their respective owners. If all goes well we’ll do it again in August or whenever we get around to it.

Let’s hope for continued good weather in September for an even bigger turnout!! Please email me with any suggestions to make this event even better.
A few friendly reminders about the event:
- Location: Hanzel Auto Body Works, 456 23rd Street, Oakland, CA and the parking lot across the street. There is room for 60 cars in the lot and a couple more in the shop.
- Date and Time: September 10th, 2011 from 8am until 10am.
- Do not drive like an idiot coming to, during, or leaving the event. We want this to be a fun, safe venue to check out great cars and talk with other car owners and families.
- Alcohol and drug consumption is not allowed nor encouraged. Oakland PD will gladly fit you with a pair of custom bracelets and a chauffeured ride in a Crown Victoria if you disagree.
- Remember to pay for parking if you use Douglas Parking lot or out on the street. It’s a lot cheaper than a fine from the City of Oakland.
- Bring a camera to document all the other nuts enthusiasts who joined you at this historic event.
